With this method, the data set is divided into two halves at the median (50th percentile, or Q2), and then the upper and lower sets of data are divided into two halves to determine Q1 (25th percentile) and Q3 (75th percentile) respectively.

When the 25% cumulative frequency percentage determined from the data is $a$ and the 75% percentage is $b$, this method returns the data value closest to and above $a$ as Q1, and the data value closest to and above $b$ as Q3.
