VO2 max means maximum oxygen uptake or maximum oxygen consumption. It is believed to be an important indicator of cardiovascular fitness under high-intensity training.
The human body consumes more oxygen when engaged in high-intensity training. A person that has the ability to absorb more oxygen into the blood over a unit of time is believed to have greater potential capacity to maintain high-intensity training. VO2 max is the estimated maximum amount of oxygen that can be consumed by a person. It is expressed in units of milliliters (kg*minutes).
During exertion over a long periods, such as a marathon, a person with a higher VO2 max will tend to perform better.
