Q10
What is the difference between optical zoom and other different types of zoom?
A10
The camera is equipped with various types of zoom: optical zoom, HD Zoom, Single SR Zoom,
Multi SR Zoom, and digital zoom.

 • Optical Zoom      :  Changes the lens focal distance.
 • HD Zoom             :  Allows greater zoom capabilities by cutting out a portion of the original image
                                     and enlarging it.
 • Single SR Zoom :  Single SR Zoom expands the zoom ratio in a way that minimizes image deterioration.
The black letters "SR" are on the monitor screen while Single SR Zoom is selected.
 • Multi SR Zoom    :  Shoots a burst of High Speed CS images, which are then combined into a final
image to suppress image quality deterioration.
The white letters "SR" are on the monitor screen while Multi SR Zoom is selected.
 • Digital Zoom        :  Digitally processes the center of the image to enlarge it.

Remember that digital zoom causes deterioration of image quality.
Digital zoom is enabled (on) under initial factory default settings.

When the image size is 16M, zooming up to 18X optical zoom (36X in combination with Single SR Zoom,
up to 36X in combination with Multi SR Zoom) is supported. When recording at VGA size, maximum zoom
is 286.9X for optical zoom in combination with Multi SR Zoom and digital zoom.

To enable Single SR Zoom, select "Program Auto" as the recording mode. Next, on the REC MENU tab of
the MENU, select "Single" for the "Zoom (SR)" setting. To shoot images with an appearance of even greater
resolution, change the recording mode to "Multi SR Zoom".
Optical zoom, HD Zoom, and digital zoom can be used regardless of the current Single SR
Zoom or Multi SR Zoom setting.

NOTE
• The value above the vertical red line on the zoom bar is the maximum optical zoom factor (including HD zoom).
In the case of Single SR Zoom and Multi SR Zoom, the value indicates the maximum zoom factor for
the type of zoom being used. Values do not include digital zoom factors.
• Single SR Zoom is disabled while shooting with the following features.
Movie Recording, Triple Self-timer, Art Shot, Multi SR Zoom,
Triple Shot , some BEST SHOT scenes
• Single SR Zoom is disabled while Multi SR Zoom is in use, so the flash setting automatically turns off.
• Only the optical zoom range is enabled when shooting RAW image data.
