Q15
What is the difference between optical zoom and other different types of zoom?
A15
The camera is equipped with various types of zoom: optical zoom, HD Zoom, Super Resolution (SR) Zoom, and digital zoom.

 • Optical Zoom        :  Changes the lens focal distance.
 • HD Zoom               :  Allows greater zoom capabilities by cutting out a portion of the original image and
                                       enlarging it.
 • Super Resolution Zoom :  Super-resolution zoom expands the zoom ratio in a way that minimizes image
deterioration. There are two types of Super Resolution Zoom:
Single SR Zoom and Multi SR Zoom.
 • Digital Zoom         :  Digitally processes the center of the image to enlarge it.

Your camera provides you with 12.5X optical zoom (18.8X when combined with Super Resolution zoom/
25.0X when combined with Multi SR Zoom), which can be used in combination with digital zoom for total
zoom capabilities of 199.3X(VGA size).

To enable Single SR Zoom, select "Auto" with the mode dial and then press [MENU]. On the REC tab, select
"Single" for the "SR Zoom" setting. If you want to Shoot with Multi SR Zoom, which produces images of even
better texture, set the mode dial to "Multi SR Zoom".
Optical zoom, HD Zoom, and digital zoom can be used regardless of the current Super Resolution Zoom setting.

NOTE
 • Digital zoom is divided between two zones: a zone in which there is no coarsening of the image and a zone
in which digital zoom causes coarsening of the image. The zoom operation will pause at the point where
zoom crosses over from the HD Zoom zone and enters the zone in which coarsening of the image occurs.
Remember that zooming past this point will cause deterioration of image quality.
